Academic Exchange
China carried out the Reform and Opening policy since the end of 1978. From then on we saw a surging trend of the research of Christianity in Chinese academia. Discussions and conferences covered wide ranges of areas, including theology, history, philosophy, literature, aesthetics, ethics, science, sociology, education and comparative religion. Seizing the opportunity, we promoted high-quality academic exchange programs with Chinese universities and research institutes.
Supporting CCSANA
We supported Chinese Christian Scholars Association in North America since 2001. The activities of this organization include the following:
(1) Hold academic conference in the United States for Chinese scholars. Our president, Rev. Grant Chen participated many times.
(2) Hold Advanced Seminar of Religion and Culture in North America every summer for a few weeks for Chinese university professors. Whenever they visited Los Angeles, we would entertain the group and President Grant Chen would give a talk on American culture and Christianity.
(3) Invite western Christian scholars to China and speak in universities.
(4) Publish Christianity and China series. We published the first 6 series for the Association.
Carrying out Academic Exchange Programs
(1) Lecturing and Visitation
From 2001 to 2004, President Grant Chen often went to China and spoke in major universities or social science research institutes. He has visited many professors.
(2) Providing Christianity Research Scholarship
Since 2005, the Blessings Foundation provided scholarship to Ph.D. students and Master students doing researches related to Christianity.
(3) Establishing CCRC
In 2006, Christianity and China Research Center (CCRC) was established under the Blessings Foundation. Rev. Daniel Ling Li was appointed as general secretary. It is our hope that through CCRC evangelical views may be heard in Chinese academia and biblical viewpoints be brought forth, that Christianity researchers from within China may be cultivated, and that their study results may be published on international platforms so that they could make contributions to the whole world.
In the year 2007, in order to commemorate the 200 years anniversary of Robert Morrison coming to China, CCRC held a grand international academic conference. The theme was “Chinese and Western Cultural Exchange, Review and Outlook."More than thirty scholars from USA, Canada, China, Europe, Hong Kong, and Taiwan were invited to present papers. Many local audiences joined the conference. A Symposium of the conference was produced afterwards.
Ministries of CCRC
1. Since 2008, CCRC managed to hold an academic conference related to Christianity each year in different Chinese universities. Once every three year the conference would be international in nature. The universities cooperated with CCRC included Renmin University of China, East China Normal University, Sichuan University, Shandong University, Shanghai University, Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan, and Hong Kong Baptist University. The following themes were covered: “The Spirits of Chinese and Western Culture and Their Future Trend,” “Church and Society in Light of Modern China,” “Christianity and Social Public Domain,” “Christian Literature/Media and Modern China,” “Christianity and Moral Construction of Modern China,” “Christianity and Medical Science in Modern China,” and “Christianity and the Rule of Law in China.”
2. Publication of Symposiums: The symposiums of all the above academic conferences were published and preserved in the library of many universities.
3. Scholarship and Award: Since 2008 CCRC took the role of awarding scholarship to Ph.D. students and Master students. After 2014 the scholarship was changed to “Excellent Paper Award Related to Christianity.” Over the years several hundred students have received financial aid through this program.
4. Each year Rev. Daniel Ling Li participated in quite a few academic conferences related to Christianity in Chinese universities.
5. CCRC cooperated with other institutes and held academic conference in Los Angeles, such as “Forum on Relationship between Politics and Religion,” “Forum on Sinolization of Christianity.”
6. CCRC published Journal of Research for Christianity in China annually since 2013.
7. In 2017 CCRC held a two-week Summer Institute for Ph.D. students in Christianity at Los Angeles. This activity was sponsored by China Evangelical Seminary North America.
